Lettera del Dott. Phunchok Zangpoo dallo Zanskar

I am Dr. Phunchok Zangpoo from Zanskar in Himalaya, the north of India , associated with this project of “Progetto  Ladakh” as local representative. It’s my pleasure and honour to be the local representative of this project and to be here among you all. And my coming here is a blessing of this project as envisioned by Dr. Stefano Dallari,the  founder of  Casa del Tibet ltalia,Votigno di Canossa,Reggio Emilia,and Dr. Guido Corradi,of ANDI- OnIus Foundation. This project as described to me is to be financed by Lions Club in Italy and to be undertaken in collaboration with ANDI onlus Foundation, Italy. So, first of alii would like to thank from the core my heart with folded arms,to all those associated with the project. To name few in order,Dr. Stefano Dallari; Dr. Guido Corradi;Lions Club, Italy and last but not the least Foundation ANDI OnIus.

I am a poor man and a good dentist. I am to be posted in a poor governmental hospital with minimum facilities to practice my skills in the field of dentistry. I have my graduate training in the field of Conservative and Endodontic;Periodontics; Prosthodontics; Orthodontics; Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry; Oral Surgery;Oral Pathology and Medicine and Public Health Dentistry. But at the hospital in Padum, Zanskar, we have at our disposition a very poor facility. There, we can just do some extraction  and preventive work. All my training, though not of any speciality, goes waste if I am not well equipped. So in this regard this project is a blessing in disguise from sky to me personally to have equipped with a very good dental clinic. And to the men and women, boys and girls of Zanskar,it’s a prayer replied to have such a good clinic.

And to the kind and warm hearted people of Italy,especially the Lions and ANDI, I, as a local, promise that I shall not let go waste all the thoughts,energy,times and moneys that you spent through the process of development of very close to your heart “Progetto Ladakh”. The seed that you saw here in Italy will definitely yield a sweet crop far beyond the Himalaya. And if this project blooms as envisioned by its pioneer Dr. Dallari and Dr. Corradi, I assure that the dental clinic in Padum, Zanskar will be the best dental clinic in entire length and breadth ofthe Himalaya.

August Audience,I would like to share with you very briefly about the situation of Health and its care at Zanskar,the remotest  valley in Himalaya. Zanskar is a tri-armed valley resided by about 20,000 people spread over an area of 7000 square meters at an altitude of 3500 metre above sea level. The valley is remote  and the people living here are making their livelihood out of the farms and the livestock they have. The health of the people is an ailing story in itself. It has a hospital as a Community  Health Centre but there are very few doctors and at times none. So,at time,the paramedicals;nurse and the dental assistant perform the duty of doctors and treat the people. People do know this but they have no choice and the government  don’t  care. Because the people are poor,the area is remote  and it doesn’t have any political importance. Thus, we are the neglected minorities.

Respected dentists of ANDI,let me briefly tell you about the condition of dental health and its service in Zanskar.

In August 2011, we carried out a survey in two schools on the valley to check the  prevalence of dental  caries with DMFT index. To our surprise, we were amazed to see that the caries is prevalent among more than 97% of the school going children with an average DMFT/deft of greater than 5. To my knowledge, I  think this is the highest ever recorded  prevalence with greatest DMFT index. Furthermore, the “Filled” part of DMFT is negligible tending to zero and the “Decayed” part of DMFT touching the sky of the statistic.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is a duty blessed upon me to work in the place on this earth, sincerely and dedicatedly to reduce this mountain of carious teeth. With the little knowledge that  I   have I will do my best to the health of the people. I   have chose to go back to Zanskar, to do my practise in dentistry to help the people am most concerned  about.  I  could have the option to choose the life of a city and to earn enough to start a good earning for me. Seeing the people of my land smiling with dirty and black teeth  and in many cases an empty mouth is what making me to choose this path. I  want to go back home and deliver some smile to the poor people of my land.

Coming here to Italy was a great experience  professionally and personally. I  am attending the dental clinic of Dr. Stefano  Dallari in Reggio Emilia and I   really appreciates the quality with which the dentistry is practised here in this beautiful land. The people here are really very kind and frank and the country very clean and beautiful.

And to the respected  volunteer dentists of ANDI who are planning to come to Zanskar in 2013, I would like to tell you that the time and energy that  you are going to  pent Zanskar would not only be valuable and precious for us but would also be a great opportunity for you all to see so many cases in the hospital, school and the villages among the high snow capped mountains  of the valley. We will also be organizing dental  health education  programmes on prevention  and oral health and hygiene in the schools and the villages. So, it will be a great experience for you all to see this land of high peaks and pure land. and I  extend  my sincere invitation to all of you.

Sono il dottor Phunchok Zangpoo dallo Zanskar, Himalaya, nell’India del nord,  coinvolto nel “Progetto Ladakh” come vostro referente. E’ mio piacere e onore essere il referente di questo progetto e di essere qui fra tutti voi. E la mia venuta qui oggi è la benedizione di questo progetto come concepito dal dottor Stefano Dallari, fondatore della Casa del Tibet Italia, Votigno di Canossa, Reggio Emilia, e del dottor Guido Corradi della fondazione ANDI. Mi è stato riferito che questo progetto sarà finanziato dai Lions Club in Italia e sarà portato avanti in collaborazione con la fondazione ANDI. Quindi, prima di tutto vorrei ringraziare dal profondo del mio cuore con riverenza tutti coloro che sono coinvolti in questo progetto. Per citare qualche nome: Dr Stefano Dallari, Dr Guido Corradi, Lions Club,Italia e ultimo ma non per questo meno importante, la Fondazione ANDI Onlus.Sono un uomo povero e un buon dentista. Sarò inviato in un piccolo ospedale statale con poche attrezzature per poter esercitare le mie capacità di dentista. Ho avuto modo di praticare, durante il mio tirocinio, la Conservativa e l’Endodonzia, la Parodontologia, la Protesi, l’Ortodonzia, la Pedodonzia e l’Odontoiatria preventiva, la Chirurgia orale, la Patologia orale, l’Odontoiatria generale e di comunità.

Ma nell’ospedale di Padum, Zanskar, abbiamo a nostra disposizione pochissime attrezzature. Lì possiamo eseguire solamente estrazioni dentarie e un po’ di odontoiatria preventiva. Tutta la mia formazione, sebbene non specialistica, rischia di andare sprecata se non potrò disporre di adeguate attrezzatture. Ed è per questo che è una benedizione dal cielo per questo progetto e per me personalmente, l’avere la possibilità di strutturare un buon ambulatorio odontoiatrico . E per gli uomini e le donne, per i ragazzi e le ragazze dello Zanskarm, è la risposta alle loro preghiere l’avere a disposizione questo ambulatorio.

Io, come vostro referente, prometto ai gentili e generosi italiani, in particolar modo ai Lions e all’ANDI, che non lascerò che tutti gli sforzi, l’energia, il tempo e i soldi che avete impiegato per la realizzazione e lo sviluppo del “progetto Ladakh”, cui siete molto legati, vadano sprecati. I semi che avete visto qui, sicuramente frutteranno un buon raccolto ben oltre l’Himalaya. E se questo progetto fiorirà come immaginato dai suoi pionieri, il Dr. Dallari e il Dr. Corradi, vi garantisco che questo l’ambulatorio odontoiatrico a Pedum, in Zanskar, sarà la miglior struttura in tutto l’Himalaya.

Gentilissimi, mi piacerebbe condividere con voi molto brevemente la situazione sanitaria e la sua gestione nello Zanskar, la valle più remota dell’Himalaya. Lo Zanskar è una regione che si distende su tre valli, abitata da circa 20000 persone distribuite su un’area di 7000 km² ad un’altezza di 3500 sul livello del mare. La valle è isolata e la gente che vive qui sta cercando il proprio sostenimento al di fuori dell’agricoltura e degli allevamenti. La salute di questa popolazione è di per sé una storia di sofferenza. Abbiamo un ospedale come centro sanitario della comunità ma ci sono veramente pochi dottori e qualche volta nessuno. In realtà, a volte, i paramedici, infermieri e assistenti odontoiatrici, svolgono i compiti dei dottori e curano i pazienti. Le persone sono consapevoli di tutto ciò ma non hanno altra scelta e il governo non se ne interessa. Perché la gente è povera, l’area è isolata e non ha alcuna importanza da un punto di vista politico. Quindi, siamo delle minoranze trascurate.

Rispettabili dentisti dell’ANDI, lasciate che vi dica brevemente la situazione della salute orale e servizi odontoiatrici nello Zanskar.

Nell’agosto 2011, abbiamo portato avanti un sondaggio in due scuole della valle per verificare la diffusione di carie con indice DMFT. Con nostra sorpresa, ci siamo stupiti nel vedere che le carie prevalevano tra più del 97% dei ragazzi della scuola con un DMFT medio superiore a 5.
Per quanto ne so, penso che questa sia la più alta incidenza dell’indice DMFT mai registrata.

Inoltre, la voce “filled” del DMFT è insignificante, tendente a zero e la voce “decayed” del DMFT raggiunge l’apice di tutte le statistiche.

Gentili signore e signori, è un mio dovere lavorare in questo posto sulla terra, con passione e devozione per ridurre questa enormità di denti cariati. Con le poche conoscenze che ho, farò del mio meglio per la salute di questa gente. Ho deciso di tornare nello Zanskar, per esercitare la mia professione da dentista per aiutare le persone di cui sono maggiormente preoccupato. Potrei avere la possibilità di scegliere di vivere in una città e di guadagnare abbastanza soldi così da poter mettere da parte dei risparmi. Vedere le persone della mia terra sorridere con denti sporchi e neri e in molti casi vedere delle bocche completamente prive di denti, è quello che mi ha fatto decidere per questo percorso. Voglio tornare a casa e dare un bel sorriso alla povera gente della mia terra.

Venire qua in Italia è stata un’esperienza grandiosa sia da un punto di vista professionale che da un punto di vista personale. Sto frequentando lo studio odontoiatrico del dottor Stefano Dallari in Reggio Emilia e apprezzo molto la qualità con la quale l’odontoiatria viene esercitata in questa bellissima regione. Le persone qui sono veramente molto gentili e aperte e il paese è molto pulito e bello.

E ai cari dentisti volontari dell’ANDI che stanno pianificando di venire nello Zanskar nel 2013, vorrei dire che il tempo e l’energia che investirete non saranno solamente di valore e preziosi per noi ma saranno anche una grande opportunità per tutti voi di vedere diversi casi nell’ospedale, nella scuola e nei villaggi fra le alte montagne coperte di neve della valle.

Inoltre organizzeremo dei programmi d’educazione sulla prevenzione, sulla salute orale e sull’igiene nelle scuole e nei villaggi. Quindi, sarà un’esperienza grandiosa per tutti voi, vedere questa regione dalle alte vette e dalle terre incontaminate e estendo il mio sincero invito a tutti voi.
